Essay on Causes of Depression in the Millennial Generation

Causes of Depression in the Millennial Generation Depression has possibly at one time affected or currently affects almost every living individual worldwide. Kids, teens, and young adults in the twentieth century were always identified as more susceptible to feeling depressed, typically due to nothing more than normal changes of physical and mental maturity. However, in her book Generation Me, Jean M. Twenge addresses that â€Å"being young has not always carried such a high risk of being anxious, depressed, suicidal, or medicated†. She tells that between only 1% to 2% of Americans born before 1915 felt depressed at least one time in their life; considerably less compared to today’s 15% to 20% of Americans (105). Young adults, teens, and children dealing with divorced parents are more likely to encounter serious depr ession. In an interview with Parent News, Ohio State University Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Human Development and Family Science, Robert Hughes, Jr, PhD, elaborated on the devastation of a child living in a broken home. â€Å"Children of divorce are twice as likely as children living in non-divorced families to experience difficulties† says Hughes, â€Å"roughly 20% to 25% of these children will have problems†. He says children raised in a divorce are more likely to be aggressive, have low self-esteem, have trouble with academics, get into trouble at school or with the law, and/or feel depressed. On an encouraging note, he states that 75% to 80% of these children, however, will not exhibit substantial difficulties (Divorce and Children). One of the largest environmental influences leading to depression in young people is drug and alcohol abuse. Some teens indulge in drug use in rebellion to the previously mentioned influence of soc iety; sadly many do not. According to Teendepression.org, 30% of teenagers who are depressed develop a substance abuse issue. Theantidrug.com reported that young Americans who are depressed and use drugs are more likely to develop serious mental disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.Show MoreRelatedA Short Note On Modern Society And Today s Culture And Society1342 Words   |  6 PagesNicole Valdecanas Mrs. McCready AP English III - E 20 February 2017 Millennials and Modern Society Are millennials more anxious, egotistical, and insecure because of today’s culture and society?
